The Martin Luther King weekend will begin with low temperatures Saturday morning in the 20s and end on Monday with sunny skies and highs in the 60s.
A cold front is expected to hit Southeast Texas on Friday night and drop temperatures down into the mid 20s on Saturday morning, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service.
Although a small chance of rainfall is expected south of the I-10 corridor during the early hours of Saturday morning, Houstonians should be looking at an overall dry day with temperatures in the low 50s, according to meteorologist Jimmy Fowler of the National Weather Service.
“It’s a dry front so most of the moisture you’ll see will be along the coast,” Fowler said. “We are anticipating temperatures Saturday night to dip down to the mid 30s in the city of Houston and into the near freezing category in areas north of Bush Airport.”
On Sunday morning, breezy conditions will have wind chill values in the mid 20s until later in the afternoon when the forecast calls for a high of 53.
Fowler said that although temperatures will not be as extreme as the New Year’s Day freeze, residents should bring in pets and cover outside plants that may be sensitive to the cold.
“We’ll stay cool for the next couple days afterwards at least,” he added. “We’re not seeing any extremely cold temperatures for the holiday but we will be seeing some below freezing temperatures.”
According to the NWS forecast, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be clear and sunny with highs in the low 60s. joel.umanzor@chron.com
