Suicide prevention walk set May 1 at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore College’s Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Case Green on the college campus.

The walk raises awareness and funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to create educational programs, advocate for public policy and support survivors of suicide loss. The event also recognizes members of our community who have been touched by suicide, as well as those struggling with depression.

Participants of all forms of mobility are welcome. Dogs on leashes are welcome at the walk. Registration will begin at noon, the opening ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

New Paltz street site of colonial marketplace

NEW PALTZ — Historic Huguenot Street presents a living history event on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and May 15 of an American colonial era marketplace. “New Netherland Marketplace, 1645” will immerse visitors in a mid-17th century New Netherland, where they will discover a diverse and culturally rich population comprised of Indigenous representatives, free and enslaved Africans, and Dutch artisans and merchants.

Living historians portraying Dutch merchants, traders, and craftspeople will be offering demonstrations on leather and wood working, hearth cooking, tailoring, timber framing, wampum making, and more. The marketplace will also include displays of camp gear and furs, clothing, wooden bowls, and spoons for sale. Demonstrations of cannon and musket firing will be taking place at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. both days. Saturday’s demonstrations will include 17th century martial arts presentations at noon and 2 p.m.

Sweethearts & Heroes plan empathy program

SHARON SPRINGS — Sweethearts & Heroes, a student empowerment and empathy activation team, will bring its messages of empathy and compassion to the Sharon Springs Central School District on Wednesday and Thursday.

The program focuses on the human and relationship skills that cause struggles for so many students.

The original presentation takes aim at preventing bullying and suicide. Rick Yarosh, a retired sergeant with the U.S. Army — injured in Iraq with burns over most of his body — will give messages about hope and overcoming adversity. The students will also try Circle, which is based on the ancient ritual of sitting in a circle to communicate and build empathy.

Chatham school library hosts author readings

CHATHAM — Authors Andrea Barnet and Akiko Busch will read from their books and discuss common themes found in their writings at 2 p.m. May 7 at the the Chatham Middle School Library, 50 Woodbridge Ave.

Barnet is the author of “Visionary Women: How Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Jane Goodall and Alice Waters Changed Our World,” and “All-Night Party: The Women of Bohemian Greenwich Village and Harlem, 1913-1930.” She splits her time between the Hudson Valley and New York City. Busch is the author of several essay collections, including Geography of Home, Nine Ways to Cross a River and How to Disappear. She lives in the Hudson Valley. The program is sponsored by Friends of the Chatham Public Library.

Nanotechnology for children planned

COPAKE — Learn about how the smallest things around us make a big difference at 1 p.m. May 14 at the Roeliff Jansen Community Library, 9091 Route 22.

Through hands-on activities, students will observe how things at the nanoscale act in unexpected ways, and how these differences are harnessed by scientists and engineers to create fascinating technology.

Academy offers five-week courses

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Italian language advanced, music, local history, painting, senior moving, local farm tours, Mars, wildflowers, iPhone photography, poetry and Indigenous beliefs are among the courses offered at the Academy for Lifelong Learning’s 13 five-week spring courses in session 2 starting the week of May 16.

Most courses are offered in-person and one by Zoom. Annual membership to all is $75. Five-week courses are $50 each. Course brochures will be available at local libraries and online at https://www.esc.edu/all.

Open house set at Health Study Clinic

HOOSICK FALLS — Area residents can attend the Hoosick Falls Area Community Advisory Panel for the Multi-site PFAS Study’s open house 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the research clinic, 140 Main St.

Attendees can tour the clinic, meet the study staff, get health information, participate in children’s activities and sign up to participate, if eligible.

It is an opportunity to make sure the area is represented in this first ever national study of the relationship between PFAS exposures in drinking water and health outcomes.

Third Thursday poetry reading set

ALBANY — Local poet Tim Verhaegen will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. May 19 at the Social Justice Center, 33 Central Ave. A reading by a local or regional poet is held each Third Thursday. The event includes an open mic for audience members to read.

The suggested donation is $5, which support poetry programs of the Poetry Motel Foundation and the work of the Social Justice Center.

GUILDERLAND — Community Caregivers will hold its 18th annual golf tournament beginning at 11 a.m. June 6 at Pinehaven Country Club, 1151 Siver Road.

It will include greens fees and carts, boxed lunch, dinner and two putting/chip-in contests. Cost is $175 a person. Proceeds benefit Community Caregivers, which provides services to individuals to live in their homes and communities with dignity and independence.

Therapy dogs are ready for duty

Certified therapy dogs from Alliance of Therapy Dogs are available to serve at schools, colleges, libraries, nursing homes, hospitals, airports and special events.

The teams can also help first responders, police officers, military personnel and veterans deal with trauma. All canines meet health and vaccination standards.

Vocal scholarship contest planned

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Voices, formerly the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society, will hold its 25th annual vocal scholarship competition for high school seniors.

Two scholarships will be awarded to the top two competitors along with an opportunity to sing in a Saratoga Voices concert. Applicants need not plan a career in music, but the scholarships are intended to facilitate the continued study of singing in college.
