Maggie Brooks, 17, sleeps outside Thursday in her backyard at her home in Colorado Springs as she participates in the Night Out Project to raise awareness and funds for homeless youths and to experience the challenges they face each night without shelter. The Night Out Project is an annual fundraiser for the The Place, a nonprofit that helps youths get out of homelessness, with a goal to raise awareness and funds that bring homeless youths inside shelters this winter. Due to COVID-19, the project was held virtually and 50 participants spent the night outdoors at their homes. According to The Place, 357 youths were without a home last month — 19 of them were under age 18. For Brooks, she felt it was important to experience what homeless youths might be going through and help raise funds for the cause. This is the first year Brooks is participating. “I know it’s an incredibly small piece of what it’s like to actually be a homeless youth,” Brooks said. “I’m just a few feet from my home where I know there is warmth and security, and they obviously don’t have that.”
