Welcome to the Kearney Public Library! Located in central Nebraska along the Platte River and routes of the Oregon and Mormon Trails, the library serves a population of 43,500. From humble beginnings in a five-room cottage in 1888, the library has grown in size, services and collections. The preservation of materials, as a part of the rich history of Western development, is an important part of the library collection.
Looking for ancestors, local events or just curious about Kearney and its surroundings? Then you have come to the right place. In order to offer expanded access to local history, the Kearney Public Library currently offers 68 years of the Kearney Hub newspaper in digital form. Genealogists, historians and others will find the newspaper a marvelous resource for birth and marriage announcements, death notices and obituaries, anecdotes and news articles. Searchable by keyword or date, issues currently online are June 1, 1889 to December 31, 1957.
Through grants and other funding sources the Kearney Public Library was able to purchase quality newspaper microfilm and arrange for its digitization. The long-term goal of this project is to continue building the online digitized collection as resources allow.
This project was supported in part by the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and granted by the Nebraska Library Commission.
