The original work on this project began with the Bloomsburg Daily, the first daily newspaper published in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The paper began publication on February 1, 1892 and continued in existence under that name until July 30, 1908 when it became the Bloomsburg Daily Mail. The Daily Mail continued publishing until September 1917 when competition forced its demise. The only copies of the Daily in microfilm reside in the Harvey A. Andruss Library at Bloomsburg University, and no paper runs are known to exist. The Democratic Sentinel was the weekly and later semi-weekly version of the Daily, and issues of the Sentinel from 1902 to 1906 were included to supplement the Daily.
Funds for the original project were supplied in part by a Library Services and Technology Act grant awarded by the Commonwealth Libraries of Pennsylvania. The Bloomsburg University Library funded the digitization of additional issues of the Democratic Sentinel and the Columbia County Republican. The Republican was the only newspaper published in a predominantly Democratic county expounding its political point of view, and it provided a counterpoint to the opposition during a 60-year period beginning in 1857.
The online version of the Bloomsburg University local newspapers is available for personal, research, and educational purposes. The content of all of these newspapers is in the public domain.
