Student newspapers at Bloomsburg University have been written and published by those students interested in and majoring in journalism since 1923, when the institution was known as the Bloomsburg State Normal School. During that time the newspaper has been printed under five different names:
This online database includes nearly every issue that has been published over a span of 75 years from 1923 to 1998. Throughout their history, the student newspapers have covered all events happening on campus, including orientation, athletics, dances, ceremonies, Homecomings, May Days, and graduations, as well as changes to the campus, curriculum, administration, and faculty. Beginning in the 1960s, the newspapers increasingly included the opinions of students on issues affecting their education and personal lives, both on campus and nationally.
A magazine intended primarily for the alumni of Bloomsburg University was published under several titles from 1894 until the final issue in 2004. It was compiled by employees of the Normal School through 1921. After a five-year absence the magazine returned in 1926 and thereafter was a publication of the Alumni Association. All issues of the magazine were microfilmed in 2005 and those from 1894 to 1975 were scanned in 2008 to be included in this database.
The digitization of the Bloomsburg University student newspapers occurred as part of four separate projects completed from 2007 to 2012. The issues were initially microfilmed in 2005 for the purpose of preservation and then the microfilm was scanned to create the digital files in this database. Funding for the digitization work came from the Office of Technology, the Bloomsburg University Alumni Association, and the Friends of the Bloomsburg University Library Association.
