Patrick Brown led Sam Houston to a 10-1 record and a District 28-5A championship in his only season.

The two-time District 28-5A champions are looking for a new football coach.

Patrick Brown resigned as Sam Houston’s coach, SAISD athletic director Todd Howey said Friday. In his only season with the Hurricanes, Brown went 10-1 and led Sam Houston to an undefeated regular season.

Howey said Brown decided to pursue other opportunities. Brown did not return calls for comment.

“He did a great job with our kids academically and athletically,” Howey said. “There’s going to be some big shoes to fill.”

The Hurricanes have won 17 straight district games, with the last 16 coming at the 5A level.

Brown took over for Gary Green, who retired after the 2014 season. Before joining Sam Houston, Brown went 25-11 in three seasons at El Paso Andress.

Howey said he hopes to have a finalist for the position presented to the school board around March 9, the start of spring break.

SAISD will also have to hire a coach at Jefferson. Doyle Redding will move to another position in the district. Redding went 21-42 in six seasons as the Mustangs’ coach. bbaby@express-news.net Twitter: @Ben_Baby
