Dennis Commission gets rolling

The Dennis Conservation Commission held three meetings in the last month.

On June 9, a joint meeting was held with members of tile Yarmouth Conservation Commission. Yarmouth members outlined their procedures and philosophy as evolved over their three years of existence, and their accomplishments to date. A number of valuable suggestions were made whereby Dennis could profit by the experience of Yarmouth. Cooperative work was emphasized and another joint meeting planned for later in the summer.

At the second meeting, June 19, State Biologist John D. Fiske discussed wetlands dredge and fill projects. Mr. Fiske is in charge of state field work to investigate and evaluate dredging and filling in southeastern Massachusetts. He prepares reports for use of Department of Natural Resources officials in their efforts to deter mine potential biological effects of these changes in natural areas.

Specific procedures were outlined for reporting violations of the dredge and fill laws to the Commonwealth, and other areas of cooperation were mentioned. Particular attention was given to projects within Dennis.

A major portion of the third meeting, July 3, was devoted to discussion of methods of investigating ownership of parcels of land in which the Commission might be interested. Individual members are contacting owners and making preliminary inquiries in order to learn more about desirability and availability of various areas. Also discussed was the responsibility of the Commission in the field of Conservation education.
