MEDWAY

Man pleads not guilty in bank heist

A Huber Heights man pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge Wednesday in Clark County Municipal Court.

Robert McLaughlin’s bond was set at $25,000, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 10. Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrested him Tuesday in connection with a bank robbery in Medway.

He was taken into custody without incident in Fairborn after authorities received numerous tips from across the Miami Valley, Sheriff Gene Kelly said.

The robbery occurred last Thursday at the Security National Bank branch at 130 W. Main St. McLaughlin allegedly walked into the bank just after 10 a.m., announced “this is a robbery” and demanded money, according to the sheriff’s office. He did not show a weapon. The robber fled in a red extended cab Dodge Dakota pickup. Kelly said the truck and clothing McLaughlin allegedly wore in the robbery will be processed for evidence. JESSICA HEFFNER

Murder charges could be re-filed

A murder case against two Springfield siblings has been dismissed, but the prosecutor said he plans to refile charges.

Charges were dismissed Tuesday against Randall E. Smith, 43, and Jody Apone, 36, following issues that made it difficult to meet speedy trial requirements, said Clark County Prosecutor Andy Wilson.

Smith was charged with murder, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse, while Apone was charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. The two were accused in the death of Curtis Gene Miller in May. Springfield police said Miller was killed inside a garage at 119 N. Jack-son St. after an argument. Smith and Apone allegedly wrapped the body in a tarp and drove it to Gravel Pit Road in Cedarville, where they dumped it in a flooded quarry.

Wilson said he plans to re-indict the two soon. “(They) are still going to be held accountable. The difference is when,” he said. JESSICA HEFFNER
