NANTUCKET, MASS. — Rafael Osona’s annual cataloged summer auction on August 2 saw lively competition for a host of fine and decorative arts and artifacts, much of it of nautical interest. One highlight was this journal recording the voyage of the whaling vessel Golconda. Captained by N.B. Wilcox, it departed from New Bedford, Mass., on a three-year voyage bound for Patagonia in 1836.

With 320 whale stamps and 76 ship stamps of various sizes, plus pencil illustrations of destinations ranging from Manhattan to Cape Horn, the journal sold in the room to a California collector for $53,820.

The Nantucket auctioneer returns on August 23 with the much anticipated sale of the Nantucket estate of Katherine S. Lodge, who left a Greek Revival mansion on Main Street that is chock full of ships’ portraits, models, maps and Charles Dickens first editions. Watch for reports on both sales in future issues. —LB
