Gun rights vs. peace of mind

Picture

A story on a gun “sanctuary” in West Texas has drawn readers’ attention.

Right to bear arms

Regarding “In West Texas county, a ‘sanctuary’ for guns” (Front page, Aug. 19): I found the tone of the article regarding the actions by a group of citizens regarding gun control to be offensive. You characterized this group and their actions as if they are an isolated bunch of nuts. What you fail (or refuse) to understand is that the views of this group are shared by more than 150 million Americans throughout the nation. Read the Second Amendment: “… the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” It’s pretty easy to understand.

Feeling vulnerable

NRA members claim the Second Amendment is under attack. But what is really under attack is the ability of Americans to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We cannot go to church in peace. We cannot gather to hear music in peace. We cannot go shopping for our families in peace. Our children cannot go to school in peace.

Politicians can and must stand up and take steps to protect the American people. We should not allow our country to continue to be held hostage by a group whose main purpose is to maximize profits for gun manufacturers.

Made for the battlefield

Regarding “In West Texas County, a ‘sanctuary for guns”, the front-page story depicts a lone man with his high-powered AK-47-type assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine in a barren wasteland. If these weapons continue to be available to anyone who wants one, the picture is the perfect rendition of where they belong — out in the middle of nowhere.

Police know this issue

Regarding “Demand gun reforms to protect public, police” (Opinion, Aug. 19): Our Police Chief Art Acevedo has it right. As president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, he has enumerated the steps that Congress should take immediately to make our nation safer : universal background checks, red flag/ extreme risk measures, an assault-weapons ban and a ban on high-capacity magazines. On Aug 12 he wrote to President Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. This is acrisis, and immediate action is needed.

It is up to us, the public, to support him and demand from them and especially from Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, to enact common-sense gun laws. It is no longer safe to go or be anywhere and we must change that. Inaction has lethal consequences every day.
