The New Mexico Department of Transportation has designated a 45-mile SAFETY CORRIDOR on New Mexico Highway 128. Fines for speeding and other moving violations will be doubled in the safety corridor that extends from near the Texas state line to mile marker 5, just past the Lucid Energy Group’s Red Hills Gas Processing Plant. Motorists will notice increased law enforcement presence from state police and Lea and Eddy and county sheriff’s deputies in the safety corridor. Motorists will see 30 new signs upon entering and leaving the safety corridor, as well as signs that alert drivers that there will be zero tolerance for moving violations. The safety corridor segment was selected by reviewing historic accident and fatality data, a speed study which demonstrated a median speed limit substantially higher than posted, driver behavior, as well as input from law enforcement.
