Eunice teenager on ATV killed in crash with truck

A Eunice teenage girl was killed Monday evening in a collision between an all-terrain vehicle and a pickup.

A second teenage girl also from Eunice was airlifted to a Lubbock area hospital.

Eunice Fire Department Chief Eddy Fabela said the accident took place off of a lease road and Turner Road.

According to the Lea County Sheriff’s office, the pickup was traveling north on Turner Road passing a lease road when an 2012 Polaris ATV traveling west on the lease road entered Turner Road and into the path of the pickup.

“A female juvenile driver and a female juvenile passenger of the Polaris ATV were thrown from the ATV upon impact,” states an LSCO statement.

Lea County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Vivian Martinez said Tuesday that neither of the girls were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

According to call logs, the dispatch call came in a few seconds after 5 p.m., in regards to an accident with injuries at 103 Turner Road.

Multiple agencies including the Eunice Fire Department, Eunice Police Department, New Mexico State Police and Lea County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Native Air was also called.

When paramedics arrived life-saving measures were started on the girls and the driver and passenger of the pickup truck were also checked.

“The 14-year old female was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash,” the LSCO statement said. “The 15-year old female juvenile was airlifted to (University Medical Center) in Lubbock, Texas.”

The City of Eunice requested prayers for the families via a FaceBook post Tuesday morning.

“Please keep several families here in town in prayer that have suffered a great loss and for the others that were involved in the accident last night,” read the post. “Our teenagers will need extra attention as well as families today.”

The Lea County Sheriff’s Department stated the crash is under investigation.
