The number of wineries in the Hill Country has exploded, attracting Texans and visitors alike.

But one in particular stands out to San Antonio Express-News readers, who voted Bending Branch Winery the best in the area for the fifth year running.

The family-run winery in Comfort prides itself on its grape varieties, sustainable practices and innovative growing techniques.

Bending Branch is known for its bold reds, such as tannat, and clean whites, such as picpoul blanc.

The family takes a diversified approach to winemaking, which helps them deal with weather fluctuations, and they work with more than 10 vineyards, most in the High Plains area, said owner Bob Young. Bending Branch isn’t certified organic but tries to get “as close as possible.”

After moving to Texas from Georgia, Young, his wife, Brenda, and their daughter Alison decided to start the winery from scratch in 2009. A former physician, Young said the cardiac benefits of red wine piqued his interest. The science involved was also appealing.

“Our whole concept from the beginning was to invest in research and development and make exceptional wines from Texas fruit,” he said.

Along with the grape varieties, Young said they emphasize customer service. Bending Branch is also celebrating its 10th tenth anniversary this year. Bending Branch Winery, 142 Lindner Branch Road, Comfort, 830-995-2948, bendingbranchwinery.com, Facebook: Bending Branch Winery
