Track athlete of the year

SAM WORLEY

School: New Braunfels Canyon

Class: Senior

Events: Middle and long distance

College choice: Texas

Highlights: Won gold in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs at the Class 6A UIL state championships. Defended his state title in the 1,600 by meet record for all classes in 4 minutes, 2:30 seconds. It also set a Greater San Antonio record. Broke another area record in winning the 800 in 1:48.25. … Ranked No. 1 in the 800 and No. 2 in the 1,600 in the nation … Won the Jerry Thompson Invitational Mile Run at Texas Relays in 4:00.61 seconds. Narrowly missed on a bid to become the 10th high school runner from the United States to a sub four-minute mile. … Owns three area records. Set the 3,200 mark (8:51.44) when he captured silver at state last year … E-N’s Runner of the Year in 2016. Quotable: “My coach (Sheila West) tells me before every race what she thinks I can run and what she thinks I’m capable of. Every time, she raises the bar. I say to myself, ‘Coach West, I don’t know if that’s in the cards today. I don’t know if I can run that right now.’ And every time, she’s right. Just being able to prove her right and run the times she says I can run is a real reward.” Also considered for E-N honor: Clark’s Jon Maas, Steele’s J.T. Woods

Field athlete of the year

JACK SCARBOROUGH

Coach of the year

JOEL CALL

School: Judson

Age: 37

Head coaching experience: Four years, all at Judson
