Social Security offices closed; VA events delayed or canceled

PROVIDENCE — In-person service at local Social Security offices has been halted until the coronavirus danger has passed, a news release said Tuesday, but anyone needing Social Security help can use the online service at www.socialsecurity.gov/onlineservices.

Also, the national 800 number, (800) 772-1213 or, for TTY, (800) 325-0778, will be staffed to help people who don’t use computers.

Meanwhile, the Veterans Administration has announced it has canceled or rescheduled many of its events and programs, such as Wednesday’s Mindfulness in Practice discussion panel about brain mechanisms, at Brown University; videotapings Thursday on Why Do You Choose VA?, which will be rescheduled; and “Be There for Our Women Veterans,” which was canceled. For more information about women’s benefits, call Carla Murchelano at (401) 223-3651, (401) 965-2019, or email carla.murchelano@gmail.com.

Also canceled are the Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Day at the Westerly Armory, on Sunday, March 29, and the April 17 and 18 Disabled American Veterans Convention at Crowne Plaza in Warwick.
