Warwick council takes no action on 4-year terms

WARWICK — A proposal to create four-year terms for Warwick’s mayor and council members remained in committee at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

The proposal comes in the form of a City Council resolution that calls for voters to decide on whether to change the term length from two years to four years in the November election.

Councilman Edgar N. Ladouceur introduced the measure. The council’s finance subcommittee voted to continue the proposal to the March 23 meeting with no discussion.

Under the resolution, voters would answer a ballot question that asks if the officials’ terms should be changed from two years to four years with the change taking effect in 2021.

The resolution also asks the Rhode Island General Assembly for permission for a ballot question.

Mayors in some other comparable Rhode Island cities, including Providence and Cranston, have four-year terms.

In Providence, mayors are limited in the number of terms they can serve.

The proposal for Warwick would lengthen the terms without adding any term limit.

The resolution says the city charter would continue to say the mayor shall serve “until his successor is elected and qualified.” mreynold@ providencejournal.com
