P-Bruins win seventh in a row, 3-1, over T-birds

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Jack Studnicka broke a 1-1 tie with his 21st goal of the season, his league-leading seventh shorthanded, as the Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds, 3-1, on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center. It was the P-Bruins seventh-straight victory. “I don’t think we had our best start, but it’s nice to get our seventh win in a row,” said the 21-year-old Studnicka, Boston’s second-round pick in the 2017 draft. “It doesn’t really seem to matter what 20 guys are playing on any given night. We just keep getting the job done.” After a scoreless first period, Ethan Prow gave the T-birds a 1-0 lead with a goal at 9:32 of the middle 20 minutes. But the P-Bruins’ Peter Cehlarik tied it with a power-play tally just 2:11 later on assists by Studnicka and Brendan Gaunce. It was Gaunce’s eighth straight game with a point. He has recorded five goals and six assists during that stretch. Studnicka broke the tie at 9:11 of the third period with Ryan Fitzgerald in the penalty box for interference. Urho Vaakanainen gave Providence an insurance goal when he scored at 16:15 of the period. Dan Vlader made 31 saves and got the win for the P-Bruins. Philippe Desrosiers had 25 saves for the Thunderbirds. Providence will continue its road trip with a stop in Hartford on Sunday for a game against the Wolf Pack at 3 p.m.
