NEWPORT — As the community prepares for the holiday season, local musicians are preparing to sing for shelter.

The 12th annual “Singing for Shelter” will take place on Thursday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Channing Church, 135 Pelham St., Newport. The acoustic Christmas concert will feature 30 Aquidneck Island musicians and will benefit Lucy’s Hearth and the McKinney Shelter. The show will also include interpreters sponsored by Bridgemark Addiction Services.

“As winter approaches, we want to do all we can to help our homeless neighbors,” said Mark Gorman, the concert’s organizer. “Every year, these musicians generously give their time and talent to help make Singing for Shelter an uplifting evening that directly benefits our two shelters.”

Several of the 2019 musicians have performed at the concert since 2007, the inaugural year. Since then, “Singing for Shelter” has raised $65,000 for the Aquidneck Island homeless shelters. The concert sells out each year.

Tickets, $25, can be purchased at Lucy’s Hearth, 19 Valley Rd., Middletown, by emailing mgorman20@cox.net, or by calling (401) 835-7209. Limited tickets may be available at the door. Doors for the show open at 6:30 p.m.
