Journal wins 8 NENPA awards

BOSTON — The Providence Journal won four first-place awards, three second-place awards and a third-place award in the Better Newspaper Competition, sponsored by the New England Newspaper & Press Association.

First place went to:

■ Tom Mooney and Jennifer Bogdan in the Investigative Reporting category for “Children at Risk,” their series about the state Department of Children, Youth & Families.

■ Mooney and Bogdan in the Business/Economic Reporting category for their series about medical marijuana, “Pot & Profit.”

■ G. Wayne Miller in the Local Personality Profile category for “Before the Fall,” his series about Gen. Michael Flynn’s years in Newport.

■ Bill Reynolds as best sports columnist.

Second place went to Edward Achorn for Editorial Writing; Tom Murphy for Photo Illustration; and the Journal staff for Multimedia Coverage.

Third place for Feature Photo went to Glenn Osmundson.

The Journal competed in the category of daily newspapers above 25,000 circulation, and the contest covered work from Aug. 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017. The awards were given out in a ceremony Saturday at the Boston Renaissance Waterfront Hotel.
