PROVIDENCE — WBRU is back on the air. In a way.
A low-power station at 101.1 FM, run by an organization at Brown called Brown Student Radio, is using the call letters WBRU-LP (for low power) and has been on the air since Jan. 3.
The low-power station is running some material from wbru.com, which is where the old full-power FM station has taken its programming. WBRU-FM aired at 95.5 FM before selling its FM signal to the adult Christian music chain, K-LOVE, last year.
On Sundays, the low-power station is airing “360° Experience in Sound,” WBRU’s popular program devoted to African-American music, and has permission to use additional streaming material from wbru.com as well. “360° Experience” continues to be available at wbru.com.
The low-power station is run by Brown Student Radio, while wbru.com is a product of Brown Broadcasting Services, a nonprofit independent of Brown University.
