CRANSTON — Out with the city seal and in with a custom slogan and logo.

After two contests, the public school district now has a new branding element to dress up its social media, website and all other communications:

“Cranston Public Schools. Building Cranston’s Future One Child at a Time.”

The top line consists of the first phrase, underlined, with a picture of a mortarboard perched atop the i and the c in the word “Public.” The tassel of the mortarboard serves as the dot of the i.

The bottom line is the second phrase, in italics.

“It just suits us and what we do daily,” said School Supt. Jeannine Nota-Masse.

Joann Mangiarelli, a science teacher at Cranston High School West, came up with the slogan. It was selected the winner among approximately 150 entries by the Cranston Education Advisory Board.

The design was done as a class assignment by Emily Bovill, a graphics student at Cranston High School West and the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center. An art department committee selected the winner.

“It was hard to make a decision” on the design from among the numerous worthy entries, said James H. Dillon Jr., executive director, school information systems and data management.

“We liked how simple it was,” he said Wednesday. “It didn’t get in the way of the message.”
