Fern, Gardenia streets to close at FEC tracks

Gardenia and Fern streets will close at the FEC railroad tracks for four days, for drainage work, starting Tuesday.

With Gardenia closed, use Hibiscus Street for local access to CityPlace.

Fern Street will have a partial closure, which will allow two-way access but motorists are asked to proceed with caution through the multiple work zones on Fern.

Purchase a pie for $25 to feed seniors in need

Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has launched the Pie It Forward campaign to help feed homebound seniors in the community.

For $25, you can choose from three different pies: apple, pecan or pumpkin. The pies are specially ordered from some of the best hotels and restaurants in the area, including The Four Seasons, Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, Table 26, Howley’s and more. If you won’t be in town or are not a fan of the dessert, you can always purchase a “virtual” pie.

The deadline to purchase is Nov. 15, and pies will be available for pickup the following week on Nov. 22 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, 650 Okeechobee Blvd.

Nature’s Way Cafe opens location on FAU campus

Nature’s Way Cafe with its healthy wraps, salads and smoothies has expanded south.

The cafe opened its seventh, and southernmost, location on Florida Atlantic University’s campus last week, according to its franchisee.

The eatery, at 3731 FAU Blvd., is housed at FAU’s Research Park, an independent collection of business that operate from the northern portion of FAU’s campus.

An after-hours grand opening party, where they’ll serve catering menu items and beverages, is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, said Suzanne Bonhoure, the franchisee and a Boynton Beach resident.

“There were requests to the franchise owners for a Boca Raton location,” Bonhoure said. “We’ve gotten a great mix of people so far.”

The cafe, with locations in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Jupiter and Delray Beach, is known for its wraps, smoothies and salads. But the new location, which previously housed a pizza place, will cater to its surroundings with other unique menu options.

“People keep coming in asking for pizza,” Bonhoure said. “We’re working on some healthy flatbread options. ... We’ve got two pizza ovens that we’ll take advantage of.”

Like the other Nature’s Way Cafe locations, the restaurant will offer carrot juice, but also other fruit and wheat juices, Bonhoure said.

She hopes the convenient location on FAU’s campus, which has its own parking spaces that do not require passes or permits, will draw local business as well as health-crazed college students.

Said Bonhoure: “We’ve been very busy so far, which is a good sign.”
