Embrace change in 2019

Collaboration, partnership, teamwork, leadership, community; I can go on and on. We all use the same words when we describe what is needed to improve the Mon Valley. Often, I think we try to see who can come up with the most descriptive words about “working together” for the “betterment of our communities;”;= but who is really implementing these words? Who among us is stepping up to the plate to get it done? The true pacesetters are few and far between and the others seem to be falling further behind. Is it fear of failure or ridicule that keeps us from moving forward? All leaders of innovative ideas, throughout the course of history have been ridiculed and lord knows they have failed, not once, but many times. Imagine if great leaders would halt to roadblocks of self doubt, fear of change or adversity. Nothing of value would be accomplished. What do the best leaders have in common? They accept failure and ridicule as part of the process, they step outside of their comfort zone, AND — this is the important one —they have the best interest of the people they lead, first and foremost. These leaders see the potential in people and know how to develop that potential for the greater good. These leaders inspire individuals to be their best and accept nothing less.

These leaders lead through uncertainty, challenges and adversity. These leaders know it is more than recognition and authority, and that it does not matter who gets the credit for the completed task. These leaders embrace change, and are not driven by egotistical satisfaction, but are driven by the people they serve. I see areas of change (by the way, “change” is my chosen word of the year) that are needed throughout our communities, and I see individuals trying to make change happen. Unfortunately, I also see individuals colliding into each other, instead of working side by side. I personally know of organizations and agencies that would better serve their constituents by partnering, collaborating and embracing change. Change takes time, so we must start now. Step up to the plate with me in 2019 and make a change. Together, we can work for the betterment of our local businesses, organizations and communities.
