Quality of life, safety draw company to Hobbs

Citing quality of life in Hobbs, Spinnaker Oilfield Services decided to build facilities on 10 acres at the north end of Magnum Industrial Road, north of the Lea County Regional Airport.

“Phase 1 is near completion ahead of schedule and we will begin production of cementing blends very soon,” said Spinnaker’s business development manager Danny Edwards. Spinnaker primarily provides cementing services at the wellhead for oil companies.

“Our bulk plant, warehouse and fully equipped laboratory is fully set and ready for operations to arrive. Our full cementing fleets and highly experienced cementing professionals will mobilize into the area within the next few weeks,” Edwards continued.

“We decided the first week of February to move into the area. We drove throughout the Permian, looking for a place and we decided on Hobbs,” Edwards said. “The biggest reason we decided on Hobbs is Hobbs is a place we can give our people a good quality of life.”

He anticipates completion of Phase 2 construction around Aug. 1.

The firm expects to be hiring locally soon.

“I plan to hire about 25 locals right off the bat. Our short term plan is by the end of 2020, to be at around 120 employees,” Edwards said.

Spinnaker Oilfield Services is a five-year-old company, founded in the Mid-Continent region, with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Okla., and a facility in El Reno, Okla.

“Spinnakers core focus is on safety, service quality and outstanding service at the wellhead,” Edwards said. “Spinnaker is led by a management team with over 300 years of cementing experience.”

Touting 39 years experience in the oilfield, Edwards emphasized the city’s quality of life improvements, saying, “I’ve had many trips to Hobbs and you guys have done a good job, especially out there in the north side of town.”

Safety also was another reason for building the facility near Hobbs, as Spinnaker boasts zero lost time injuries.

“Instead of all of our equipment staying in the Magnus of the Permian Basin, Hobbs is kind of on the outside and our people can drive into it,” Edwards said. “We decided on Hobbs, the biggest reasons being quality of life and safety.”

Once in full operation locally, the company will begin trucking cement to what Edwards called “the crazy Permian Basin.”

He joked, “Those of us from outside the Permian Basin, we call it the Thunderdome,” a reference to Mad Max movies and challenges of safe driving in the area.
