The Austin Symphony’s annual Halloween concert for young ears features frightfully fun symphonic music that is also stimulating for kids (ages 2-10). Families are invited to dress up in their favorite costumes and listen to music from “Spider-Man,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Jaws” and Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” with narration by local actress Bernadette Nason. The program will close with John Williams’ famous “Star Wars Suite: Main Title.”

Chez Zee is bringing back the spooky evening of macabre, mysterious poems and stories by Edgar Allan Poe along with Lemon Rosemary Productions. The romance, the passion and the fears of one of America’s most distinguished writers are brought to life by University of Texas professor Lucien Douglas in this dramatic presentation that includes performances of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven.” The event will feature Chez Zee’s signature desserts, coffee and “Raventini” cash bar.

The multi-artist exhibit at Art for the People began as an idea to acknowledge gratitude for companion animals and expanded to include all animals and other entities that make a difference in the world, with a total of 58 local artists participating. Many are showing at the South Austin gallery for the first time. It’s an exhibit you should come back multiple times to see: Art for the People will rotate art from the artists displaying multiple pieces.

Beloved food blogger Lisa Fain, known as the Homesick Texan, has written a cookbook about Texans’ favorite cheesy dip, queso. It’s not just full of recipes, although there are 50 of them — a range of down-home standards and contemporary updates. “Queso!” is a fun, full-color look at the spicy, cheesy, comforting cult favorite, with history, tips, facts and more. At the book talk and signing, enjoy tastings of Kerbey Lane Cafe’s queso along with seasonal brews from Saint Arnold Brewing.

Acclaimed Irish playwright Conon McPherson takes us to his mystical and haunting home country as the City Theatre takes on this Austin premiere of his wickedly funny fable of redemption. It’s Christmas Eve in Dublin when old acquaintances gather for a card game at Sharky’s childhood home. With the arrival of a stranger from a distant past, the stakes of the game are quickly raised, and Sharky comes to realize he’s playing for more than what’s on the table.

Hosted by Animal Lovers of Austin, this architectural dog-centric event showcases prototype doghouses created by Austin’s best and brightest architects, interior designers and builders. The fund-raiser draws in pooches and people alike to check out and bid on these one-of-a-kind doghouses, learn about adoption and animal advocacy opportunities, shop local vendor booths, take part in a costume contest and do other fun activities. It benefits Austin Pets Alive, Lizzy’s Animal Hospice and Meals on Wheels’ PALS Program.
