Four Hawks make all-tournament after state finals

Hendrickson girls joined by Rouse, Vandegrift players.

Hendrickson freshman goalie Makenna Garcia heads a group of four Hawks named to the Class 6A girls all-tournament team after the 2017 UIL soccer championships.

Garcia joined senior midfielder Christina Arteaga, senior forward Jayme Woodfill and junior midfielder Bryana Hunter on the squad chosen by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.

Garcia posted two shutouts in two games at state: 1-0 over Keller in a Class 6A semifinal and a 2-0 victory over Katy Tompkins in the championship Saturday. She made 15 total saves, including seven against Tompkins.

Hunter was the offensive hero for the Hawks against Keller, scoring the game’s only goal with two minutes to go in extra time. She scored on a header after a corner kick by Arteaga.

Vandegrift, which lost to Tompkins 3-1 in a Class 6A girls semifinal, placed two players on the all-tournament team — junior forward Afrah Kahn and senior defender Kelly Flynn.

In Class 5A, Rouse placed two players on the girls all-tournament team — junior goalie Celise Phillips and sophomore defender Sydney Sheehan. Aledo eliminated Rouse in a Class 5A semifinal Thursday.
