Westtown School's student newspaper, The Brown and White, debuted during the 1914-1915 school year. Named for the school colors (which were selected in 1897), the newspaper's first issue was published October 2, 1914. That issue and others that followed contained articles about student activities, alumni and faculty news, editorials about Westtown and world events, student literary pieces, photographs and advertisements. While the name never changed, the frequency of publication of The Brown and White and its style and content did change over time. The publication rate went from twice a month to once a month (and sometimes less frequently) beginning in the 1960s. The paper's content during the latter part of the twentieth century included more feature stories, editorials, and student literary pieces and photography.
All issues of The Brown and White from 1914 to 1999 housed in the school archives are included in the digital archive. (Only two issues from the first year of publication are in the collection and there may be issues missing from later years.) The extant issues from 1914 to 1999 were microfilmed in 2006. The film was scanned and digitized in 2008, making it possible for Westtown School alumni, students, faculty, and staff to access these issues of The Brown and White from near or far and search by keyword across all articles and advertisements. For users who prefer to see the newspaper intact, each issue can be browsed page by page. Users can also download, print, and email articles.
