Bluebonnet Society to compete in Horse Day event

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, a Texas horse rescue with foster homes in the Texarkana area, is competing with rescues across the country to win up to $25,000 in prizes from the ASPCA’s Help a Horse Day event.

The goal of the nationwide Help a Horse Day competition is for local rescues to raise awareness about the life-saving work they do year-round in their communities to care for at-risk horses that have often been abused or neglected.

To promote awareness about the event, Bluebonnet is holding several Bluebonnet in Bloom events and will have an informational booth and display about the need for horse rescue this month at the Susar Farm horse show in Denton, Texas.

The event in Denton will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24. BEHS volunteers will have an informational booth and display to educate horse enthusiasts about the need for horse rescue and how to get involved.

Rescue horses available for adoption will be on hand to meet the public, and adopted horses will be competing in the show ring.

“This will be our first year competing in the Help a Horse event. I hope the community comes out to support our horses, volunteers and organization. The more people who attend our events during April and greater the number of new volunteers and funds we raise, the better the chance we have of winning one of the prizes from the ASPCA. Those funds will allow us to help even more horses this year,” said Dr. Jennifer Williams, executive director of BEHS.

Founded in 2005, BEHS has rescued 804 abandoned, abused and neglected equines.

Funds raised by Bluebonnet will be used locally to help law enforcement agencies in Texas investigate reports of neglect or abuse; remove abused, neglected and abandoned horses and other equines; and provide food, medical care and foster homes to rehabilitate them.

BEHS is offering 25 percent off adoption fees for any horses adopted in the month of April.
