Earlier this year, the Mary John Goree Las Animas County Scholarship Foundation announced four initial winners of the scholarship for 2019-2020: Antonio Arant of Trinidad High School, Averie Navarette and Joshua Waller of Hoehne High School, and Finn Warner of Branson High School.

The Mary John Goree Las Animas County Scholarship offers Las Animas County residents a guaranteed minimum award that will meet or exceed full tuition and fees and can be used at any four-year college or university in the United States (other than Princeton University). The scholarships include tuition and books, but do not cover living expenses.

According to Foundation president, David J. Vandermeulen, “Antonio, Averie, Finn and Joshua were chosen from a large pool of highly qualified applicants for their remarkable achievements inside and outside of the classroom. The Foundation believes that they will continue to set and meet very high standards for themselves at the institutions of higher education they choose to attend.”

This year, one of the awardees, Antonio Arant, a senior at Trinidad High School, accepted the award and will be using the scholarship to attend a technology-centered school in New Mexico. We caught up with him recently to see what his plans are.

“I have committed to going to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology,” said Arant. “It is located in Socorro, New Mexico. Because New Mexico Tech is a small, tech-oriented school that offers rigorous classes in science math and engineering, I chose to attend that school.”

Despite a unique semester finishing out his senior year, Arant has continued pushing forward and preparing for the next chapter in his education.

“Right now, I am just focused on completing this year’s classes,” said Arant. “I think all the dual-enrollment classes that I have taken throughout high school have given me the opportunity to prepare for a four-year university setting.”

The Foundation finalized the class after May 4, which is the deadline for the initial winners to accept or decline the Foundation’s offer of a scholarship.
