Minority students to attend conference A three-day minority leadership conference, " A Community Solution: Helping Youth to Help Themselves," will be held May 8-11 at the 4-H Center. High school students from the three public school districts in Pulaski County have been selected to attend based on their grade point average and involvement in extracurricular activities. Speakers will be Marva Davis, a lawyer, and the Rev. Rickey Hicks, a community activist. The conference is sponsored by the Afro-American Studies Club of Sylvan Hills High School, Riverside Community Services and the state Health Department. Stories, music to mark opening of new library Stories and music will highlight the April 27-28 opening of the Adolphine Fletcher Terry Library, 2015 Napa Valley Drive. It will be the seventh branch in the Central Arkansas Library System, which serves Pulaski and Perry counties. Harry Ashmore, an award-winning author and former editor of the Arkansas Gazette, will be guest speaker when the library is dedicated at 7 p.m. April 27. April 28, activities will include: " Jack and the Beanstalk" by the Arkansas Arts Center's Tell-a-Tale Troupe at 10:30 a.m. Folk dancing by the Arkansas Country Dance Society at 2 p.m., followed by folk music by the Rackensack Society at 2:30 p.m. Story telling by Ethel Ambrose at 3 p.m. A performance by Juggles the Town Clown and the presentation of a $1,000 donation to the library by Jif Peanut Butter. The $1.9 million library was part of a bond issue approved by voters in 1987. It will be stocked with 22,000 books placed on about one mile of shelving. Auction on April 28 to benefit Spina Bifida The Arkansas Spina Bifida Association will hold an auction at 10 a.m. April 28 in the Arkansas Building on the state Fairgrounds. Hundreds of items, ranging from automotive parts to brass, ceramics, bedding, furniture and groceries, will be sold. Proceeds will be used to support those with spina bifida and their families. Admission is $1. Call 224-2300 for more information. Southwest Lions Club has 30th anniversary The 30th anniversary of the Southwest Lions Club will be celebrated with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. today at the Gilbreath Conference Center at 9601 Wilbur D. Mills Freeway. Freddie A. Joyce of Searcy, an international director of the organization, will be the speaker. Chartered March 7, 1960, as the Mabelvale Lions Club, the club started with 25 members. Two of the original members Frank Zimmerman and Fulton Baxley remain active in the club. La Corazon sponsoring scholarship pageant La Corazon, an organization of black professional women, is sponsoring a pageant for high school juniors and seniors, at 7 p.m. June 16.
